How to Prevent Back Spasms
Muscle spasms in the back are quite common. Sometimes the spasms are small and sometimes they can send a grown man to the floor in tears.
What Causes Back Spasms?
To answer that we’ve got to define the two types of back spasms:
Acute Back Spasms
These spasms come on suddenly and without any warning. They most often occur when someone has lifted something or changed position. Acute spasms have the ability to cause intense pain and make mobility difficult if not impossible for a time.
Chronic Back Spasms
Chronic back spasms occur on a more regular basis. Many people develop these spasms as a result of a back injury.
Preventing Back Spasms
There are a variety of things you can do to lessen the likelihood of a back spasm coming on.
Stretching
We recommend our clients get into the habit of stretching daily. Stretching reduces muscle tension and stops spasms from occurring. Here are some of the best stretches for back spasms. A simple search on Youtube will offer a plethora of videos on how to perform these:
- Child’s pose
- Hip lifts/glute bridges
- Cat-cow pose
Many of our clients also find rolling their back over a foam roller can also be very relaxing.
The following may also help relieve muscle tension, preventing a back spasm from developing:
- Massage
- Rehabilitation / physical therapy (if the spams are a result of an injury)
- Yoga
- Mindfulness-based stress reduction
- Acupuncture
- Tai Chi
- Biofeedback
