    How to Prevent Back Spasms

    April 21, 2023

Muscle spasms in the back are quite common. Sometimes the spasms are small and sometimes they can send a grown man to the floor in tears.

    What Causes Back Spasms?

To answer that we’ve got to define the two types of back spasms:

    Acute Back Spasms

These spasms come on suddenly and without any warning. They most often occur when someone has lifted something or changed position. Acute spasms have the ability to cause intense pain and make mobility difficult if not impossible for a time.

    Chronic Back Spasms

Chronic back spasms occur on a more regular basis. Many people develop these spasms as a result of a back injury.

    Preventing Back Spasms

There are a variety of things you can do to lessen the likelihood of a back spasm coming on.

    Stretching

We recommend our clients get into the habit of stretching daily. Stretching reduces muscle tension and stops spasms from occurring. Here are some of the best stretches for back spasms. A simple search on Youtube will offer a plethora of videos on how to perform these:

    • Child’s pose
    • Hip lifts/glute bridges
    • Cat-cow pose

Many of our clients also find rolling their back over a foam roller can also be very relaxing.

The following may also help relieve muscle tension, preventing a back spasm from developing:

    • Massage
    • Rehabilitation / physical therapy (if the spams are a result of an injury)
    • Yoga
    • Mindfulness-based stress reduction
    • Acupuncture
    • Tai Chi
    • Biofeedback

    Chiropractic Care

Whether it’s through spinal manipulation or laser therapy or any number of treatments, chiropractors can help relieve back pain and prevent it from returning. We can also help someone make necessary lifestyle changes as well as show them alternative movements for work and play.

If you suffer from back spasms, we can absolutely help. Give us a call or stop by our office for a free personalized treatment plan.

How to Prevent Back Pain While Traveling

    November 17, 2022

You wait all year for that two-week vacation, so you don’t want to spend it rubbing a sore back from traveling. There’s no doubt that driving long distances or flying in ridiculously cramped quarters can give anyone back pain.

Here are some things you can do to prevent back pain while traveling:

Move Your Body as often as Possible

If you are flying, be sure to get up and use the restroom or walk up and down the aisle a few times. If you’re driving, be sure to pull over at those rest stops and get out and stretch your legs and back muscles.

    Manage Your Stress

Stress causes our muscles to tense, increasing the likelihood of back pain. Managing your stress may mean being better prepared for your travels. Don’t leave things until the last minute but write a to-do list to accomplish those tasks that are important. Practicing mindfulness and deep breathing can also help greatly in reducing the mental, emotional and physical effects of stress. And finally, speak to a therapist if you are dealing with a lot of stress in your life.

    Make Some Adjustments

Speaking of being mindful, be more mindful of how you move through your day when traveling. For instance, so many people stand in long security lines or boarding lines carrying heavy bags on their shoulders. Keep the bags on the floor and only pick them up (carefully and mindfully) when the line begins to move.

When slinging those heavy bags above you into the overhead compartment, be sure to have your legs should-width apart or more for balance. Tighten your ab muscles to support your back and use as gentle movements as possible. If you are incapable of getting your bag up there without hurting yourself, please ask for help.

You may also want to work with a chiropractor before your trip to work out any misalignments you have. This way you can feel your very best on your vacation!

If you’re headed out for an adventure and want to get an adjustment, please stop by our office or give us a call!

Winter Has Arrived! Follow These Fall Prevention Tips

    December 2, 2021

Winter can be a lovely time of year as the snow falls and blankets the ground and bare trees. But winter can also be a dangerous time for some, as icy steps and sidewalks can lead to more falls and broken bones.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that each year, approximately one million Americans injure themselves due to falls. No doubt many of these happen during winter. To prevent falls this winter season, follow these tips:

Wear the Correct Footwear and Gloves

Be sure that the shoes or boots you are wearing provide enough support and traction on slippery surfaces. Always check your boots’ and shoes’ soles to recognize if the solves have been worn down.

Also, always wear gloves on frigid days so you can keep your hands out of your pockets to improve your balance and hold onto railings.

    Take Your Time

In the winter, always give yourself extra time so you never have to rush. Taking smaller, slower steps is one of the most effective ways of preventing a fall.

    Use a Mobility Aid

Older folks begin to lose their balance. Some might even lose sensation in their feet due to diabetes and other chronic health conditions. Using a mobility aid such as a walker or cane can help seniors reduce their risk of falling.

    Use a Deicer

Be sure to use a deicer on your steps and sidewalks to prevent slips. If you or your neighbors have pets, there are deicers that are pet safe.

    Stay Inside if Possible

Of course, the best way to prevent falls due to inclement winter weather is to stay inside! Consider stocking up on food. Many stores also offer delivery services so you can stay put.

Winter can be a great time of year. Just be sure to follow these tips so you can enjoy it safely.
